A few days ago, when I was out walking in my neighborhood, I thought about this section from Killer in the Retroscape (https://books2read.com/u/3npP0P). Not that anyone ran off the sidewalk to avoid me ... though many stepped into the street, as did I when I was the first to notice. It's a different world, where shunning your neighbor is considerate rather than a slight.
